In vitro fertilization is an amazing testimony to modern reproductive technology. It can also be a difficult process for many couples: physically, emotionally, and economically. With this in mind, anything that can improve success rates for IVF is very welcome. Exciting research is ongoing studying the effects of combining acupuncture with IVF. The protocol consists of at least 8 treatments using electro-acupuncture (a gentle current flowing through the needles) in the month preceding egg harvest. This treatment brings more blood flow to the ovaries and uterine lining. As a general rule, when an organ has an increased blood supply, it functions at a higher level. There is also one treatment before & one after the transfer to calm stress hormones and relax the uterus to encourage implantation. The data is very exciting. In women who received acupuncture, pregnancy rates were statistically similar, although numerically higher (50% vs. 45%). Miscarriage rates were statistically lower (8% vs. 11%). This study and others can be found in the "articles" section of www.eastwindsacupuncture.com. If possible, try to schedule all 8 sessions to ensure you get them all in before egg harvesting. Most women come in 2x/week for 4 weeks, but these treatments can be more frequent is time is an issue. |
