Acupuncture is a time-tested, safe, effective, and drug-free way to eliminate pain. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) both acknowledge the benefits of acupuncture in treating and eliminating pain due to a wide range of causes. Small, sterile needles are inserted at the site of the pain and at points along the same channel or meridian. Some of these pathways follow nerve channels, others are independent. The theory in Chinese medicine is that when the meridians are able to flow freely, one has no pain. When these channels are blocked, or stagnant, either from over-use, injury, or a degenerative disease, one feels pain. Acupuncture can bring more blood flow to an area, which helps speed up the healing process of a sprain/strain or chronic injury. It can also reduce inflammation and bring down swelling of an acute injury. It is thought that acupuncture also elicits the release of the body's natural pain killing hormones. Acute pain usually responds quickly to treatment (relief in 1-4 sessions), whereas more chronic pain can take longer to respond (a good estimate is 1 session for every month you have been in pain.) Acupuncture works very well in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy for pain management. I work with two fabulous chiropractors: Dr. David Peer, D.C. and Dr. Zandall Carpenter, D.C., an amazing massage therapist Nylissa Wilke, LMT.
